Rap & R&B reached new heights when it was crowned the year’s most popular music genre, accounting for 24.5% of all music purchases. This popular music genre holds its number one status for a variety of reasons.
However, there’s something to be said about the time and energy spent on the marketing and promotion on the trend-setting music genre.
If you’re looking to get into the rap music industry but are unsure about how to go about promoting your music, read on for our top tips.
Attempting to multitask is one of the various reasons why rappers run into difficulty while launching their music career. Instead of focusing on one goal at a time, they’re focused on running a number of different side hustles.
These side hustles typically include goals like growing their fan base, producing music for other rappers, marketing their music, booking gigs, and recording new singles.
While it’s important to try to progress in each of these areas, it’s important to narrow down your focus. By splitting up your energy into multiple directions you’ll find that it takes much longer to achieve your goals in any one specific area.
The first step you want to take in a solid marketing and promotion plan for your music is to commit to investing your time and resources to the task.
While it’s normal to work a day job while attempting to advance your rap career, the remainder of your time should be dedicated to one music-oriented goal at a time.
It’s important to view the marketing and promotion of your rap career as you would do any project. This means breaking down your project step by step so you know exactly what moves you’ll need to make next.
Your plan may include some of the following techniques:
If you’re like most musical artists, you can easily become a perfectionist when it comes to your work. To you, the track always has room for improvement. Unfortunately, this means but you can easily waste an entire 3 to 6 months on perfecting one single track.
Multiply that by 12 tracks for a full compilation, and you can see how your promotion and marketing plan can quickly come to a halt.
Commit to creating one solid single that you can then take the various platforms. Set a deadline for yourself for when your single will be completed. Try your hardest not to move the deadline back, no matter how much work you believe the track still needs.
Once you’ve reached the level you’re satisfied with your single and believe that you truly have a hit on your hands, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
The next step in the process is to take your produce single and get it in front of the right people. Years ago this would mean contacting radio stations, managers, and record labels in the hopes of getting your music heard.
Today, the artist has much more control over getting their own pieces in front of a large audience.
By taking advantage of various music streaming platforms like Spotify, iTunes, and SoundCloud you can easily share your music with anyone in the world without even needing to be signed.
From there you can send links the music bloggers and influencers. Choose one that has a steady flow of traffic and an audience that falls within your genre.
As your music begins to move among influencers, you’ll start to notice the traffic gradually trickling it.
This is the time to start showcasing your personality. Start by using your own personal marketing tools to connect to your audience to show them why your music is levels above others.
Be sure that you’re utilizing major social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to update your fans on upcoming projects and shows.
Reaching out to underground rap music publications is also a way to get in front of the type of audiences that later set the hottest trends in rap music.
You may also want to create a website where you can easily display tour dates and any upcoming collaborations.
Many businesses trying to take their website traffic to the next level will use guest posting as a way to expose their products to a larger audience. The same works for wrapping, however, you want to tap into this method by collaborating with the right artist.
For example, choosing a popular musician who can sing vocals in one of your tracks can be a strong choice. This is due to the fact that they are neither a competitor or someone that would have any interest in your failure.
In fact, this type of musician is more likely to promote your project collaboration to their own audience to enhance your exposure.
Creating a strong marketing promotion strategy is just one of the many ways you can enhance your rap career and take it to the next level. However, there are a number of additional details needed to come together in order to reach a level of success.
