Gaining a following for your music doesn’t always happen overnight. In today’s age it takes a clever marketing campaign to grown your fan base. This article explains social media for musicians in 8 easy tips.
Wondering how to use social media for musicians to build your brand?
You’re probably already on Facebook, Snapchat, or some other favorite social media sites. But using these sites for personal reasons is much different than using them to promote your music. You can’t use the same approach both places. If you want to get your music noticed, you’ll need a strategy.
With so much advice out there about how to use social media for musicians, it’s sometimes hard to know where to begin. That’s what we’re here for. In this guide, we’ll give you the simple steps you need to follow to successfully promote your art.
Social media is a crucial part of how to get fans – keep reading to find out how to make it work for you.
If you’re on Facebook, you already have a following. Maybe it’s just friends and family, but that’s how all artists start!
If you don’t have an artist page yet, it’s time to make one. Once you have it, you can invite your current Facebook friends to like your artist page. The people who already “like” your posts often will probably be glad to see more from you.
When you make an artist page, you can easily grow new followers. And since you’re building from an existing social media following, you won’t be “cold-calling” for new fans.
You can also invite your current followers to share what you do with their friends and family members. A few personal social media shares can go a long way!
To choose the people you should invite to follow your artist page, just go to a previous post you’ve made on your personal page that got a lot of likes. Check out who “liked” it, then invite them to like your artist page first, since they already engage with your posts. Bonus points if you use a rap or hip-hop-related post to choose your followers.
Twitter is often underutilized by artists and musicians. Even though it’s not a visual platform, it can still be a huge help in growing your following.
Twitter lists help you use the site while keeping things organized. They also make it easier to reach the right people and develop relationships with them that will lead to growing your following.
If you’re not familiar with using Twitter lists, it can take a few hours to get going. But once you’ve gotten through the initial learning curve, the benefits will pay off.
After you’ve established your Twitter page, go through all the people you follow and sort them into custom lists. You’ll want to be sure to follow people in the music industry, such as PR companies, labels, music writers, and producers. Supporting fellow musicians is always a good look, too.
When you add a person to a custom Twitter list, they’ll get notified. This is a great way to get their attention! Be sure to give your lists positive names, like “people I’d love to work with” or “excellent music writers.” The people you add will start checking out your page to see what you’re all about.
Social media is all about the visuals. When you’ve got people checking out your page, you need to make sure that you use your visual space wisely, so they’ll like what they see.
You’ll want to focus mostly on the visuals of your artist pages, but it doesn’t hurt to clean up your personal pages, too. Your header images will be the first thing someone notices when they visit your page, so make sure they give the effect you want them too.
Use your header images to make your page visually attractive, and to advertise your work. For example, if you have an upcoming tour, design a nice header image that features all of your upcoming dates. If you don’t have a new album or tour dates to promote, try another call to action. Your header can invite people to check out your Soundcloud or reach out and connect with you on social media, for example.
Your header image shouldn’t stay static all the time, either. Changing it a lot is actually a good thing: it’ll keep your followers engaged by showing them what you’re up to.
This is also a good way to advertise without coming on too strong. Every time you change your image, you can advertise something new, but fans will react positively to seeing it come across their feed since it’s a minimally-invasive way to advertise.
Many social media sites allow you to “pin” a post to the top of the page. Select a great pinned post to maximize the effectiveness of this tool.
If you’re not pinning posts, you’re missing a great opportunity to get your fans to notice your content. You should post often, but there will surely be some posts that you want more attention on.
If it’s a new song or album release date, for example, maximize the number of people who see it by “pinning” it. Pinning also lets you control what the people who visit your page see first.
